Discretionary grant payments for business affected by COVID-19

Businesses who have not qualified for other grants are now able to check if they are eligible for a discretionary grant payment from a limit pot of funding announced by Government last month. On 1 May 2020 the government announced it was allowing local authorities to develop policies to pay discretionary grants to local businesses affected by COVID-19. These grants are to be paid from the limited amount of funding made available by central government. The final guidance was published by government on 27 May 2020. While local authorities are able to decide their own policies, government has asked that four specific types of businesses are prioritised for the grant, and has specified three mandatory criteria all applicants must meet in order to receive the grant. As funding is limited the policy is restricted to those businesses the government has specified are a priority plus businesses the council consider to be local priorities. Cllr Graham Middleton, Borough Council of King's Lynn & West Norfolk Cabinet Member for Business Development said: "We have been aware of a number of businesses that have fallen through the gap with government support and we have already contacted them with the link to our website so that they can apply if they are eligible. We have already received 53 applications and we are processing these and hope to make the first payments today. This funding is limited, so it important that businesses check their eligibility before applying. While we acknowledge that this will not provide support to every business, we hope it will at least assist some of those businesses who missed out on the

original grants provided by government." Full details of eligible businesses and the eligibility criteria are available on the borough council's website The Borough Council of King's Lynn & West Norfolk Responsibly supporting the Covid-19 Recovery Strategy Stay Alert - Control the Virus - Save Lives
